Retaining Wall Engineering, Design & RPEQ Certification — Cairns
Under the National Construction Code and AS 4678, retaining walls over 1m must be engineered.
We provide all of this for residential and commercial retaining walls across Cairns and Far North Queensland. We also inspect existing walls that are leaning, cracking or showing signs of drainage failure, and provide RPEQ-certified reports for council, insurers or building certifiers.

When Do You Need a Retaining Wall Engineer?
Under AS 4678 and the National Construction Code, any retaining wall over 1m associated with a building or structure must be certified by an RPEQ Engineer. Once a wall reaches 1.5m, it is automatically classified as a structure where failure could cause moderate damage, requiring more in depth structural design, geotechnical assessment and RPEQ sign-off.
If you are unsure whether your wall needs certification, contact us and we can advise.

Inspection & Assessment of Existing Retaining Walls
If your retaining wall is leaning, cracking or showing signs of water damage, we inspect it on site.
Using concrete scanning and other non-destructive testing tools, we assess the condition of the wall and its footings, identify the cause of failure, and provide an RPEQ certified report.
See our page on Concrete Structures and Structural Inspections to see how we do this differently to your standard Engineering consultancy.
Where repair or replacement is needed, we design the solution and provide RPEQ certified Plans.

Drainage Design — Critical in Far North Queensland
AS 4678 requires drainage to be designed as part of every retaining wall, not added as an afterthought.
In Far North Queensland, poor drainage is the leading cause of retaining wall failure.
Heavy wet season rainfall saturates retained soil, increasing pressure on the wall well beyond what the structure was designed to handle. We design drainage systems as part of every retaining wall certification, and inspect existing walls where drainage failure is suspected.
